What the green tick actually is

Worth understanding what you are applying for before you spend three months chasing it.

It is official business verification, and nothing more The badge beside a business name on WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook tells a customer that Meta has confirmed this account belongs to the business it claims to be. It is an identity signal. It says nothing about your prices, your service or whether you deliver.
It is not the same as business verification Business verification is the document check that lets you use the API at all, and it is a yes or no on paperwork. The badge is a separate application, judged on how well known and how visible your business is. You can be fully verified, sending templates and collecting naira, with no badge at all.
It is not required to run on the API Nothing about your account works differently without it. Your templates, broadcasts, flows, team inbox and reporting are the same either way. What the badge adds is a visual cue in the chat header and in search, which is trust, not function.
Meta decides, at its own discretion There is no checklist you can complete to earn it and no fee that buys it. Meta reviews each application against criteria it does not publish in full, and grants the badge when it chooses to. Anybody who guarantees you a green tick is selling something they do not control.
The criteria

What Meta looks at

Nobody outside Meta sees the scoring. These are the things that consistently matter in the applications we help Nigerian businesses prepare.

NOTABLE Notability, which mostly means press The badge is aimed at businesses people already talk about. Coverage written by journalists, in newspapers, on business sites, on radio or on television, is the strongest signal you can give. Paid adverts, sponsored posts and press releases you placed yourself do not count.
NAME The same name in every place Your CAC record, your display name, your website, your Instagram handle, your Facebook page and your Google Business Profile should all say the same thing. A business trading under three slightly different names reads as three weak businesses rather than one established one.
PRESENCE An established presence, not a new page A page created last month with a handful of posts is a hard application to argue. Meta looks for a business that has been operating and posting consistently, with a real audience that comments, reviews and shares, not bought numbers.
COMPLETE A profile that is actually filled in Website, address, category, opening hours, a proper logo and a description in the business name. Empty fields make it easy for a reviewer to decide quickly, in the wrong direction.
SEARCH What comes up when somebody searches you Whoever reviews the application will type your business name into a search engine. What they find, or fail to find, is part of the decision. A site on your own domain, a Google Business Profile with real reviews and mentions on other people's sites all help.
Not the same thing

Business verification against the green tick

These two get confused constantly, and the confusion costs people weeks.

Question Business verification Green tick
What it checks Your documents How known you are
What you submit CAC and business details An application for review
Required for the API Yes No
Decided on Facts on paper Meta's own judgement
Visible to customers No Yes, a badge
If the answer is no Fix and resubmit Wait, then reapply
Before you apply

What to fix first

An application sent before the basics are tidy is a wasted attempt, and there is a wait before you can try again.

01 Settle on one name Decide the exact name your business trades under, then make your CAC record, your display name, your website and every social profile match it down to the spelling. Fix the odd ones out before you apply, not after.
02 Put your website in order A live site on your own domain, carrying your business name, what you sell, your address, a working phone number and a proper about page. If a reviewer cannot tell what your business does in a few seconds, that is the first thing to solve.
03 Earn coverage you did not pay for Talk to journalists and editors who cover your industry, enter awards, speak at events, do something worth writing about. One genuine article in a publication people actually read is worth more than a hundred sponsored posts.
04 Tidy your Meta assets One Business Manager, your Facebook page and Instagram account linked into it, business verification already completed, the right category chosen and the profile fully filled in. A messy account structure is an easy reason to say no.
05 Apply once, properly Submit through Business Manager with your strongest coverage attached, then leave it alone. There is a waiting period before you can try again, so a rushed second attempt costs you time instead of saving it.
After you apply

If the answer is no

A rejection is not a verdict on your business. It usually means Meta could not find enough about you outside your own channels.

WAIT There is a waiting period Meta sets a minimum wait before you can submit again, and the window is shown in Business Manager when the decision comes through. Applying before it passes achieves nothing except using up the attempt.
FIX Use the wait properly Nothing changes on a resubmission unless something has changed about the business. Get the coverage, tidy the names, build the profile, then go back with a stronger file rather than the same one.
REALITY Some businesses will not get it Plenty of solid, profitable Nigerian businesses are simply never written about, and the badge is built around being written about. If that is you, decide early how many months it is worth spending on it.
MEANWHILE The API is the part that earns The badge is a trust cue. The verified number, the team inbox, the templates, the bookings and the payments are what answer customers and collect money, and they work exactly the same with or without it.
Straight answers

What people ask us about the green tick

Can you get me the green tick? No, and nobody can. Meta decides and does not publish the full criteria. What we do is make sure your business verification, display name and profiles are clean so the application is as strong as it can be.
How much does the green tick cost? Meta does not sell it. If somebody quotes you a price for a guaranteed badge, they are either charging you to prepare an application they cannot decide, or selling you nothing at all.
Do I need it to send broadcasts? No. Approved templates, broadcasts to your opted-in list, flows, AI replies and the shared team inbox all run on a verified number with no badge on it.
Will my CAC certificate get me the badge? It helps you pass business verification, which is the document check. The badge is about how visible and how well known the business is, so CAC on its own does not decide it.
Does a bigger following help? Real interaction helps more than a headline number. Meta is looking for a business people talk about, so comments, reviews, mentions and press do far more for you than bought followers.
We are well known in Lagos but never in the papers. What now? Start with what you control. A proper website, one consistent name everywhere, a Google Business Profile with genuine reviews and a steady posting record, then look for real coverage in trade press or local business media.
