WhatsApp Business Description Examples: 30 Templates You Can Copy

This paragraph is exactly 512 characters long, spaces and full stops included, which is the most WhatsApp lets you write in the description on a Business Platform profile. Read it at a normal pace and it takes about twenty seconds. That’s your whole pitch to a stranger who tapped your name to check you’re real: what you do, where, when, and what happens if they message you. The 30 WhatsApp Business description examples in this guide each use about half of that, and every one shows its exact character count.
This one is 139 characters, the cap on your About line, the short status that sits under your name. Most businesses forget it’s even there.
Those two boxes are the only places on your WhatsApp profile where you get to talk in sentences. Everything else is a name, a list or a pin on a map. So it’s worth getting the sentences right, and it’s quicker than it looks once you know what a customer is checking for.
In this guide, we’ll look at where the description and About line actually show up, the character limits Meta publishes for every profile field, a four-question formula, 30 examples across business types and countries, About lines for the weeks that are different, what to leave out, and where to paste the finished text: the app, WhatsApp Manager, the API or DMly.
Where Your WhatsApp Business Description Shows, and Who Reads It
Your WhatsApp Business description shows on your business profile, the page a customer opens by tapping your name or number at the top of a chat. WhatsApp’s Help Center lists what they see there: your business name, description, address, business hours and category, plus the month and year you joined the WhatsApp Business app.
That tells you who your reader is. It’s almost never someone browsing. It’s someone who already has your number (from a sign, an ad, a friend or a link) and wants to check two things before they type: are you real, and are you the right place for what they need.
A good description answers both in the time it takes to scroll once. A weak one makes them guess, and people who have to guess usually don’t message.
One exception worth knowing. In Brazil, WhatsApp runs a Business directory where people can find businesses they don’t yet have a number for, and the Help Center asks businesses there to fill in a description “in the bio” along with everything else. WhatsApp says the directory is currently only available in Brazil. Everywhere else, your description works on people who already found you, so write it for them, not for a search box.
If you haven’t set up the rest of your profile yet, start with our guide to WhatsApp Business profile setup and the name customers see. It covers the name, photo, category and hours in depth, and this page picks up where its short section on the description stops.
WhatsApp Business Description Character Limits for Every Profile Field
On the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API), the description can be up to 512 characters and the About line from 1 to 139 characters. Meta publishes those numbers, along with limits for three other fields, on its business profile reference page for developers.
| Profile field | Limit on the Business Platform | Worth knowing |
| Description | 512 characters | Your main pitch. Our 30 examples average 247. |
| About | 1 to 139 characters | Can’t be empty. Links don’t become clickable, and formatting like *bold* isn’t supported. |
| Address | 256 characters | Free text. Meta doesn’t check it against a map. |
| 128 characters | Must be a valid email address. | |
| Websites | Up to 2, 256 characters each | Must start with http:// or https://. A Facebook Page or Instagram link counts. |
| Category | One of 21 set values | Picked from a list, so there’s nothing to count. |
What about the free WhatsApp Business app? WhatsApp’s Help Center explains how to edit the description and About fields in the app, but it doesn’t print a character limit for either. We couldn’t find one published anywhere official, so we won’t give you one. If you write to Meta’s API limits, you’re safe on the Platform, and if the app ever stops you short, trim your least useful sentence first.
One field is missing from that table on purpose: business hours. The app has a proper hours setting. The API’s profile has no hours field at all, which means that on the Business Platform the only place a customer can read your hours on your profile is in your description. That’s why most of the examples below include them.
Counting tip: characters include spaces and punctuation. We left emojis out of the examples so the counts stay exact, because depending on how it’s counted, one emoji can take up more than one character. Meta does say emojis display fine in the About line.

The Formula Behind These WhatsApp Business Description Examples
Every one of the WhatsApp Business description examples below answers the same four questions, in roughly this order: what do you do, where, when, and what happens if I message you? That’s it. If your description answers all four, it’s doing its job, whatever it sounds like.
- What you do, in the customer’s words. “Cuts, color and curly hair” beats “premium hair solutions”. Name two or three things people actually ask for.
- Where, or which area you cover. A neighbourhood, a city, a delivery radius or “clients anywhere”. People want to know if you’re near enough before they ask anything else.
- When. Opening hours, reply hours, lead times (“order 3 days ahead”). On the API this is the only place your hours can live on the profile.
- What happens if they message you. Tell them what to send and what they’ll get back: “Send a photo of the problem and we’ll reply with a price.” This is the line that turns a profile visit into a conversation, and it’s the one most businesses leave out.
Then, if there’s room, add one detail that removes a worry: how people pay, the languages you speak, a “from” price, free returns, a licence you genuinely hold.
A few habits make the difference between a description that reads well and one that reads like a form:
- Skip your business name. It’s already at the top of the profile. Spending 20 characters repeating it buys nothing.
- Write numbers as digits. “7am to 6pm” and “3 km” are faster to read than words.
- Use “I” if it’s just you. A one-person business that writes “our team” sounds bigger and less trustworthy at the same time.
- One idea per sentence. People read this on a phone, often with one thumb, often while doing something else.

30 WhatsApp Business Description Examples You Can Copy
Here are 30 WhatsApp Business description examples, grouped by type of business, each with its exact character count, a matching About line and the category to choose. Swap in your own area, hours and services. Where you see [phone], put the number customers should call.
How to read the notes under each one:
- The character count is out of 512, Meta’s limit for the description on the Business Platform. Every example here is under 300, so you have room to add a line of your own.
- The About line is a short status to go with it, counted out of 139. Change it whenever something changes.
- The category is the closest of Meta’s 21 Business Platform categories, written the way WhatsApp displays it. In the app you can pick up to three categories, so add more if they fit.
The examples are written for the profile, which customers read before they message. For the messages you send afterwards (confirmations, reminders, follow-ups), our collection of WhatsApp Business message templates has more than a hundred.
WhatsApp Business description examples for salons, spas and beauty (1 to 6)
Beauty businesses get the same opening question again and again: can you fit me in? Every description here answers it by inviting the customer to name a time.
1. Hair salon (Austin, US)
Hair studio in East Austin for cuts, color and curly hair. Open Tue to Sat, 9am to 7pm, with walk-ins when the book allows. Message us your hair goal and a day that suits you, and we’ll reply with the next three open times and a price range. Hablamos español.
259 of 512 characters. About line (54 of 139): Booking about a week out. Message us for today’s gaps. Category: Beauty, Spa, and Salon.
The closing promise (three open times and a price range) is what turns a profile visit into a message. The Spanish line costs 18 characters, space included, and tells Spanish-speaking customers they can write the way they speak.
2. Barbershop (Manchester, UK)
Walk-in and booked barbering in Ancoats, Manchester. Skin fades, beard trims and kids’ cuts. Open Mon to Sat 9 to 6, late Thursdays till 8. Message the time you’d like and we’ll tell you straight away if a chair is free. Card and cash taken.
241 of 512 characters. About line (45 of 139): Walk-ins welcome. Open till 8pm on Thursdays. Category: Beauty, Spa, and Salon.
Barbers live on walk-ins, so the description says so first. “Straight away” is only honest if somebody really watches the phone; if nobody does, swap it for “within the hour”.
3. Nail studio (Bengaluru, India)
Nail studio in Indiranagar, Bengaluru. Gel, acrylic extensions and nail art, plus manicures and pedicures. Open 11am to 8pm, closed Tuesdays. Send a photo of a design you like and we’ll quote the price and how long it takes. Pay by UPI or card.
244 of 512 characters. About line (49 of 139): Bridal nail slots open for November and December. Category: Beauty, Spa, and Salon.
Nail art is priced by design, so asking for a photo up front saves three rounds of “how much for this one?”. Naming the payment methods matters in India, where customers expect UPI.
4. Day spa (Dubai, UAE)
Ladies-only day spa in Jumeirah 1, Dubai. Massages, Moroccan bath, facials and hair treatments. Open daily, 10am to 10pm. Message the treatment and the time you’d like, and we’ll confirm your therapist and price. Packages from AED 250.
235 of 512 characters. About line (43 of 139): Ramadan hours: 1pm to 1am. Book by message. Category: Beauty, Spa, and Salon.
“Ladies-only” is the first thing many Gulf customers need to know, so it leads. A “from” price filters out mismatched enquiries without a price list that goes stale.
5. Lash and brow studio (Lagos, Nigeria)
Lash extensions, brow lamination and microblading in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. Home service on the Island for a travel fee. Open Mon to Sat, 10am to 7pm. Send BOOK with your preferred date and we’ll share open slots and the deposit amount.
235 of 512 characters. About line (37 of 139): Home service slots open this weekend. Category: Beauty, Spa, and Salon.
A one-word reply (“BOOK”) is easy to type and easy to spot in a busy chat list. Mentioning the deposit early saves an awkward message later.
6. Mobile massage therapist (Denver, US)
Licensed massage therapist serving Denver and Aurora. Deep tissue, sports and prenatal massage, at your home or my studio in Capitol Hill. Evenings and weekends. Message the type of massage and your zip code, and I’ll reply with times and a total that includes travel.
268 of 512 characters. About line (28 of 139): Next open evening: Thursday. Category: Beauty, Spa, and Salon.
Written in the first person because it’s one person. Only say “licensed” if you are: a credential in a profile is a claim a customer can check.
Descriptions for clinics and health services (7 to 10)
Health businesses have one extra job: keeping medical details out of the chat and pointing anyone urgent to a phone. Each of these does that in one sentence.
7. Family dental practice (Chicago, US)
Family dental practice in Lincoln Park, Chicago. Checkups, cleanings, fillings, whitening and emergency visits. Mon to Fri 8am to 6pm, Sat 9am to 1pm. Message us to book or reschedule. Please don’t send medical details here; for severe pain or swelling, call [phone].
267 of 512 characters. About line (55 of 139): New patients welcome. Ask us about your insurance plan. Category: Medical and Health.
The last sentence does two jobs: it keeps health details out of the chat and gives someone in pain a faster door. Clinics anywhere should keep that line, whatever else they change.
8. Physiotherapy clinic (Leeds, UK)
Physiotherapy clinic in Headingley, Leeds, for back and neck pain, sports injuries and rehab after surgery. Self-referral, no GP letter needed. Weekdays 7am to 8pm, Saturday mornings. Message to book a first assessment and we’ll send times and the fee.
252 of 512 characters. About line (38 of 139): Early 7am appointments free this week. Category: Medical and Health.
“No GP letter needed” answers the question UK patients most often have before they book privately. It’s worth one line.
9. Veterinary clinic (Singapore)
Neighbourhood vet clinic in Tiong Bahru, Singapore. Vaccinations, check-ups, dental care and minor surgery for cats, dogs and small pets. Open daily, 9am to 9pm. Message us to book a visit. For emergencies, please call [phone] instead of messaging.
248 of 512 characters. About line (36 of 139): Open on public holidays, 9am to 5pm. Category: Medical and Health.
Same rule as the dentist: a chat is the wrong door for an emergency, and the description is where you say so before anyone needs it.
10. Optician (Pune, India)
Eye tests, spectacles and contact lenses in Koregaon Park, Pune. Free frame adjustments for anyone, customer or not. Open 10am to 9pm, all days. Message a photo of your prescription for a lens quote, or ask for an eye test slot.
228 of 512 characters. About line (29 of 139): Most glasses ready in 2 days. Category: Medical and Health.
A small free service (frame adjustments) gives people a reason to message you before they need anything. The prescription photo makes the quote quick.
Descriptions for restaurants, cafés and food businesses (11 to 15)
Food customers want to know three things fast: are you open, can I order, and how long will it take. These answer those first.
11. Taqueria (Houston, US)
Family-run taqueria in Houston’s East End. Tacos, birria and breakfast plates, dine-in or pickup. Open daily, 7am to 10pm. Message your pickup order and we’ll reply with the total and a ready time. Catering trays for 10 to 100 people.
234 of 512 characters. About line (37 of 139): Birria Fridays are back. Order ahead. Category: Restaurant.
Restaurants get the same three questions all day: are you open, can I order, how long. This answers all three before anyone asks.
12. Home bakery (Abuja, Nigeria)
Custom cakes, small chops and dessert boxes, baked to order in Wuse 2, Abuja. Please order 3 days ahead, or 7 days for weddings. Delivery across Abuja for a fee. Send the date, the number of guests and a design photo, and we’ll quote in naira.
243 of 512 characters. About line (44 of 139): Fully booked 20 to 22 December. Order early. Category: Food and Grocery.
Lead times are the single most useful fact for a bakery. Putting them in the description stops the “can I get a cake tomorrow?” message before it arrives.
13. Cloud kitchen (Mumbai, India)
Home-style North Indian thalis and biryani, cooked fresh in Andheri West, Mumbai. Delivery within 5 km, noon to 3pm and 7pm to 11pm. Message MENU for today’s dishes, or tell us your team size for an office lunch order.
218 of 512 characters. About line (38 of 139): Diwali sweet boxes: taking orders now. Category: Restaurant.
Two service windows, written plainly, because a kitchen that delivers twice a day gets messages at 4pm that it can’t fill. The office-lunch line opens the door to bigger orders.
14. Café (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
Specialty coffee and all-day brunch in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. Open 8am to 6pm, closed Mondays. Message to reserve a table for 6 or more, or to order beans for pickup. Pork-free kitchen.
185 of 512 characters. About line (42 of 139): Closed Monday. New single-origin beans in. Category: Restaurant.
Short, and that’s fine: a café needs fewer words than a clinic. “Pork-free kitchen” answers a question many Malaysian customers would otherwise have to ask. Only say halal if you hold the certificate.
15. Event caterer (Abu Dhabi, UAE)
Event catering in Abu Dhabi and Dubai: Arabic, Indian and continental buffets for 20 to 500 guests, with staff and setup. Send the date, guest count and venue, and we’ll reply with two menu options and a quote in AED within one working day.
240 of 512 characters. About line (40 of 139): Taking bookings for National Day events. Category: Event Planning and Service.
Caterers live or die on the brief. Asking for the three facts that set the price means your first reply can be a real quote.
Descriptions for shops and online stores (16 to 20)
Retail descriptions work best when they ask for the thing you need in order to quote: a screenshot, a model number, a list, a measurement.
16. Online boutique (ships across the US)
Women’s dresses and workwear in sizes 0 to 24, shipped across the US from Atlanta. Message us a screenshot of anything on our site to check your size, stock or delivery date. Free returns within 30 days. Real people reply 9am to 6pm ET.
236 of 512 characters. About line (45 of 139): Holiday orders: order by Dec 15 for delivery. Category: Clothing and Apparel.
Online shoppers message about fit and delivery, so that’s what the description invites. Give the time zone: a customer in Seattle reads “9am” differently.
17. Phone and laptop repairs (Lagos, Nigeria)
Phone and laptop repairs at Computer Village, Ikeja. Screens, batteries, charging ports and water damage. Most screen repairs done the same day. Send your phone model and a photo of the damage, and we’ll give you the price before you come in. Mon to Sat 9 to 6.
261 of 512 characters. About line (33 of 139): iPhone 15 screens in stock today. Category: Shopping and Retail.
“The price before you come in” is the promise that beats the stall next door. The About line changes with stock, which is exactly what it’s for.
18. Neighbourhood grocery (Hyderabad, India)
Your neighbourhood grocery store in Madhapur, Hyderabad. Staples, fresh vegetables, dairy and household items. Send your list here by 6pm for same-day home delivery within 3 km. Pay by UPI or cash on delivery. Open 7am to 10pm.
227 of 512 characters. About line (33 of 139): Fresh vegetables in by 8am daily. Category: Food and Grocery.
A cut-off time (6pm) and a radius (3 km) answer the two questions that decide whether a customer orders from you or from an app.
19. Furniture showroom (Quezon City, Philippines)
Solid wood furniture, made in Pampanga and sold from our showroom in Quezon City. Dining sets, beds and custom sizes. Delivery across Metro Manila. Message a photo of your space and its measurements, and we’ll suggest pieces that fit, with prices in pesos.
256 of 512 characters. About line (35 of 139): Showroom open Sundays, 10am to 7pm. Category: Shopping and Retail.
Furniture questions are about fit, so the description asks for measurements. Customers who send them are already halfway to buying.
20. Florist (Bristol, UK)
Seasonal flowers, hand-tied bouquets and wedding flowers from our shop on Gloucester Road, Bristol. Same-day delivery in Bristol on orders placed by 1pm. Message the occasion, your budget and the delivery address, and we’ll send a photo of what we can make.
257 of 512 characters. About line (34 of 139): Mother’s Day: order by Friday 1pm. Category: Shopping and Retail.
Asking for a budget feels forward, but it’s kinder than a price list: the customer gets something they can afford, and you don’t quote twice.
Descriptions for trades and professional services (21 to 26)
Service businesses sell time, so the description should collect the details that set the price before your first reply.
21. Plumber (Phoenix, US)
Licensed plumbing for homes in Phoenix, Mesa and Tempe. Leaks, water heaters, drain clogs and repipes. Upfront prices before any work starts. Text a photo of the problem and your zip code for a quote. Mon to Sat 7am to 6pm; for emergencies, call [phone].
254 of 512 characters. About line (34 of 139): Same-day slots open today in Mesa. Category: Professional Services.
Trades get the best enquiries when they ask for a photo first. “Text” reads naturally to American customers; use “message” elsewhere.
22. Real estate agent (Dubai, UAE)
RERA-registered agent covering Dubai Marina, JLT and JVC. Apartments to rent and buy, plus off-plan advice. Send the listing link, or your budget, area and move date, and I’ll reply with viewing times. Arabic, English and Hindi spoken.
235 of 512 characters. About line (39 of 139): Viewings available this weekend in JVC. Category: Professional Services.
Name the areas you actually cover, so a buyer looking somewhere else moves on without costing you an afternoon. State a registration only if you hold it.
23. Accountant and tax filing (Delhi NCR, India)
GST returns, income tax filing and bookkeeping for small businesses and freelancers in Delhi NCR. Fixed monthly packages. Message your business type and roughly how many invoices you raise a month, and we’ll reply with a package and price. Mon to Sat, 10am to 7pm.
264 of 512 characters. About line (38 of 139): ITR season: send documents by 25 July. Category: Finance and Banking.
“How many invoices a month” is the question that sets the price, so the description asks it. The About line is your own internal deadline, set ahead of the official one.
24. Freelance web designer (Toronto, Canada, clients anywhere)
I design and build websites for small businesses: salons, clinics, restaurants and shops. Fixed-price projects, usually 2 to 4 weeks. Based in Toronto, working with clients anywhere. Message your current website (or “none yet”) and what you want it to do, and I’ll reply with a rough quote.
290 of 512 characters. About line (33 of 139): Booking new projects for January. Category: Professional Services.
A remote business has no address to show, so the description says where you are and that it doesn’t matter. Leave the address field blank.
25. Auto repair shop (Columbus, US)
Auto repair and maintenance in Columbus, Ohio. Brakes, oil changes, diagnostics and AC for most makes. Message your car’s year, make and model and what’s going on, and we’ll reply with a quote and the earliest drop-off time. Mon to Fri 7:30am to 5:30pm.
253 of 512 characters. About line (40 of 139): Free check-engine light scan this month. Category: Automotive.
Year, make and model are the three facts every mechanic asks first. Asking in the profile means the first message is already useful.
26. Home cleaning (South London, UK)
Regular and end-of-tenancy cleaning across South London. Insured, vetted cleaners who bring their own supplies. Message your postcode, the number of bedrooms and the day you’d like, and we’ll send a fixed price. Booking 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm.
246 of 512 characters. About line (40 of 139): Spring deep-clean slots open from March. Category: Professional Services.
“Bring their own supplies” and “fixed price” remove the two worries that stop people booking a cleaner they’ve never met.
Descriptions for gyms, tutors, events and travel (27 to 30)
These businesses sell a date or a seat. The description’s job is to get that date into the first message.
27. Strength gym (San Diego, US)
Strength and conditioning gym in North Park, San Diego. Coached group classes, open gym and personal training. Open 5am to 10pm weekdays, 7am to 4pm weekends. Message TRIAL to book a free first class, and we’ll send this week’s schedule.
237 of 512 characters. About line (28 of 139): New 6am class starts Monday. Category: Other.
A free first class is the classic gym hook, and a single keyword makes it effortless to claim. There’s no fitness category in Meta’s list of 21, so Other is the closest fit on the Business Platform; the app’s own category list may offer a better match.
28. Tutoring centre (Port Harcourt, Nigeria)
After-school lessons and WAEC, NECO and JAMB prep in GRA Phase 2, Port Harcourt. Maths, English and sciences in small groups, plus home tutoring. Mon to Sat. Message your child’s class and subjects, and we’ll reply with times and fees for this term.
249 of 512 characters. About line (33 of 139): JAMB prep classes start Saturday. Category: Education.
Parents search by exam, so the exams are named. Fees “for this term” matches how Nigerian parents budget.
29. Wedding and event photographer (Lagos, Nigeria)
Wedding, traditional engagement and event photography across Lagos, Ibadan and Abuja. Photo and video packages, drone included. Send your date, venue and number of guests, and we’ll check availability and share packages. Travel outside Lagos is quoted separately.
263 of 512 characters. About line (39 of 139): December weekends almost full. Ask now. Category: Event Planning and Service.
The date comes first because availability is the only question that matters until it’s answered. The travel line prevents a surprise later.
30. Tour operator (Bali, Indonesia)
Private day tours and airport transfers across Bali with English-speaking drivers. Ubud, Uluwatu, Mount Batur sunrise and custom routes. Message your hotel area, dates and group size, and we’ll reply with an itinerary and a price in IDR or USD. Replies 7am to 10pm WITA.
270 of 512 characters. About line (33 of 139): Nyepi Day: no tours or transfers. Category: Travel and Transportation.
Visitors message from other time zones, so the reply hours carry one (WITA is Bali time). Offering two currencies saves a conversion question.
WhatsApp Business About Line Examples for the Weeks That Are Different
The About line is the short status on your WhatsApp Business profile, and it works best for whatever is true this week rather than forever. Your description says who you are. The About line says what’s going on: you’re closed for a holiday, you’re fully booked, you’ve moved, you’ve got something new in.
In the app you can type your own or pick one of WhatsApp’s presets, and a preset tells a customer nothing about you. On the Business Platform the About line can’t be left empty, so it’s always saying something; make sure it’s something useful. Here are fifteen to adapt, with counts out of 139:
- US, Thanksgiving: Closed Thanksgiving Day. Back Friday at 9am. (44)
- Christmas: Closed 25 and 26 Dec. Messages answered from the 27th. (54)
- Eid: Eid Mubarak! Closed Friday to Sunday, back on Monday. (53)
- Diwali: Open till 11pm all Diwali week. (31)
- Ramadan: Ramadan hours: 8pm to 2am. Book by message. (43)
- Lunar New Year: Closed for Lunar New Year until [date]. Orders resume [date]. (61)
- Fully booked: Fully booked this week. Message us to join the waitlist. (56)
- Moved: We’ve moved! Now at [new address], two doors down. (50)
- New number: New number. Please save this one and delete the old one. (56)
- Reply time: We reply within 2 hours, 9am to 6pm. (36)
- Holiday: On holiday until [date]. Orders placed now ship on [date]. (58)
- Weather: Deliveries paused today because of the rain. Back tomorrow. (59)
- Something new: New autumn menu starts Monday. Ask us for it. (45)
- Hiring: Hiring a part-time stylist. Message us if that’s you. (53)
- Back to school: Back-to-school slots open. Book by message. (43)
Two things to remember. Links in the About line don’t turn into tappable links (Meta says so on its developer page), so put web addresses in the website field instead. And an out-of-date About line is worse than a dull one: “Closed for Eid, back Monday” three months after Eid tells a customer nobody is minding the shop.
If your hours change for a holiday, the About line is the notice and an away message is the reply. Our guide to WhatsApp away messages and business-hours auto-replies covers the second half.
What to Leave Out of Your WhatsApp Business Profile Description
Leave out anything a customer can’t use: slogans, keyword lists, claims you can’t back up, prices that change weekly and personal details you wouldn’t put on a shop window. Here’s why each one costs you.
Slogans and “leading provider” language
“Committed to excellence” and “your satisfaction is our priority” are the most common words in business descriptions and the least read. They take up space the four answers need. If you love your tagline, it can live on your website.
Keyword lists
“Salon hair salon best salon Austin hair color Austin” doesn’t help you get found. Outside Brazil’s directory, nobody searches WhatsApp for a business, so a keyword list only reaches people who already have your number, and they’ll think it’s spam.
Claims you can’t prove
“Number one”, “best in town”, “guaranteed results”. A customer can’t check them, so they don’t believe them, and in health, finance or anything regulated they can break rules your industry already follows. Specific beats superlative: “open since 2014” or “insured cleaners” is a claim someone can trust.
Prices that move
A full price list in the description goes stale the first time you change a price, and then a customer quotes it back at you. A “from” price (“packages from AED 250”) sets expectations without the risk. For an actual menu of products or services, a WhatsApp Business catalog is the right tool, and it updates in one place.
Anything private
Your profile is more public than it feels. WhatsApp’s Help Center says your business account is visible to anyone who has your number saved, including people you’ve blocked, and that blocked users can still view your business profile and catalog. So no home address if you work from home (use your area instead, as the web designer and massage examples do), no personal mobile number, and nothing you’d mind a difficult ex-customer reading.
Your display name, rewritten
The name at the top of your profile is a separate field with its own rules on the Business Platform, and the description doesn’t change it. If you’re unsure whether your name will pass Meta’s review, run it through our free display name validator before you submit it.
Hoping for a badge
A perfect description won’t earn you a verified badge. That’s a separate process with its own requirements, explained in our guide to the WhatsApp verified badge. What a good description does is make an unbadged business look like a real one, which for most customers is what the badge was for.

Where to Paste It: the App, WhatsApp Manager, the API or DMly
Once you’ve adapted one of the WhatsApp Business description examples, where you paste it depends on how your number is connected: in the app’s Profile screen, in WhatsApp Manager, through the API, or in the tool that manages your number. If you’re not sure which one you’re on, our comparison of the WhatsApp Business app vs API explains the difference in plain terms.
In the WhatsApp Business app
- Open the Tools tab and tap Profile.
- Tap the description field, paste your text and tap Save.
- Tap the About field. Type your own line under Currently set to, or pick a preset, then tap Save.
- While you’re there, check Business hours (Open for selected hours, Always open or Appointments only) and Category, where you can pick up to three.
WhatsApp notes that it’s still testing updates to business profiles, so a field or two may look different on your phone. Its advice is to keep the app updated so new options reach you.
In WhatsApp Manager (Business Platform)
If your number is on the Business Platform, Meta’s own route is WhatsApp Manager > Account tools > Phone numbers, then select your number and open the Profile tab. There’s a form for each field. Stay inside the limits in the table above.
Through the API
If a developer looks after your number, the fields they need are called description and about, sent to the WhatsApp Business Profile API. Hand them the text, the 512 and 139 limits, and the category (the API calls it vertical, with values like BEAUTY or PROF_SERVICES). They’ll know the rest.
In DMly
If your WhatsApp number is connected to DMly, go to Bot Setup > WhatsApp, which opens the WhatsApp Cloud API Configuration page, and open the Profile tab. DMly’s documentation describes it as the business profile customers see on WhatsApp, including the photo. The docs don’t list each field on that tab or say whether it counts characters for you, so keep to Meta’s limits above and check the result on a phone.
One thing to check first: if the channel shows Unauthorized, DMly’s docs say the profile settings go blank until you reconnect the number. Reconnect, then edit.
If your number uses coexistence
Some businesses keep using the WhatsApp Business app on the same number after connecting it to the Business Platform, which is called coexistence. Meta’s feature table for coexistence lists the business profile (name, address, website and so on) as unchanged in the app and not supported on the Cloud API side. So on a coexistence number, edit your description and About line in the app, the way you always have.
Then look at it like a customer
Whichever route you used, open your profile from a phone that hasn’t saved your number and read it as a stranger would. Our profile setup guide has a full fifteen-minute review for this; the short version is: can you tell what they do, where, when, and what to send? If you share your number through click-to-chat links or a QR code, tap one yourself, because that’s the route most new customers take to your profile.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I write in my WhatsApp Business description?
Answer four questions: what you do, where you are (or which area you cover), when you’re open or reply, and what a customer should send you to get started. Add one detail that removes a worry, such as how people pay or which languages you speak. Leave out slogans and your business name, which already shows at the top.
How many characters can a WhatsApp Business description have?
On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta’s limit is 512 characters for the description and 1 to 139 for the About line. WhatsApp’s Help Center doesn’t publish limits for the free app. Most good descriptions need far less than 512: the 30 in this guide average 247.
What’s the difference between the description and the About line?
The description is the longer paragraph explaining what your business does, and it rarely changes. The About line is a short status of up to 139 characters, best used for what’s true right now: holiday closures, fully booked weeks, a move or something new in stock.
Can I copy these WhatsApp Business description examples word for word?
Yes, that’s what they’re for. Change the area, hours and services to your own, put your real number wherever you see [phone], and remove any claim that isn’t true for you, such as “licensed” or “insured”. Then check the length again if you’ve added much.
Can I put links in my WhatsApp Business profile?
Use the website field: the Business Platform allows up to two websites, and Meta says a Facebook Page or Instagram link counts. Links typed into the About line don’t become tappable. Meta doesn’t say how links inside the description behave, so don’t rely on them there.
Why isn’t there a business hours field on the API?
Meta’s Business Profile API has fields for about, address, description, email, profile picture, websites and category, and none for hours. The app has an hours setting, but on the Business Platform your description is the place to write them.
Can I write my description in two languages?
There’s one description field, so both languages share it and its limit. A short second-language line works well, like “Hablamos español” in the Austin salon example or “Arabic, English and Hindi spoken” for the Dubai agent. Keep the main text in the language most of your customers use.
Does a good description help people find my business on WhatsApp?
Only in Brazil, where WhatsApp runs a Business directory and asks listed businesses for a full profile. Everywhere else there’s no WhatsApp search for businesses, so your description works on people who already have your number. Getting the number in front of people is a separate job, done with links, QR codes, ads and your other profiles.
The 512 Characters, Spent
The paragraph at the top of this page used every one of its 512 characters to tell you what this guide was about. That’s the most a description can hold on the Business Platform. Not one of the 30 WhatsApp Business description examples above needed more than 290.
That’s the real lesson of the limit: it’s a ceiling, not a target. A customer tapping your name wants four answers and an invitation, and once they have those, every extra word is in the way.
So pick the example closest to your business, change the details, read it once from a stranger’s phone, and set an About line for this week. Then leave the description alone and keep the About line honest. That’s ten minutes, and it’s the part of your profile that does the talking when you can’t.
